What is SAFE?
Launched in 2010, the Safer Anaesthesia from Education (SAFE) project is a training initiative of the AAGBI with World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). Developed collaboratively with partners, the aim is to bring practitioners of anaesthesia (who throughout the world may be doctors but are largely non-doctors) to a level of practice whereby they can deliver vigilant and competent anaesthesia.

The SAFE approach combines UK anaesthetists with local instructors, who are provided with a training of the trainers course to become the in-country faculty of the future. SAFE three-day courses in obstetrics or paediatrics and has now been delivered in nine countries with excellent results.

The AAGBI (Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland) and the WFSA (World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists) are pleased to announce the award of two grants totalling £295,412 through the Department for International Development and the Tropical Health Education Trust’s Health Partnership Scheme to develop obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia in East Africa.
